ILLUSTRATIONS
PAGE BALLOON ASCENSION, 21 NOVEMBER 1783 132 Water color by an unknown French artist, showing the first flight by human beings, made by Pilatre de Rozier, and the Marquis d'Arlande, from the garden of the Chateau de La Muette, Paris, to the Butte aux Cailles, in a balloon constructed by Etienne and Joseph Montgolfier. See Jefferson to Turpin, 28 Apr. 1784, p. 134-7. (Courtesy of the Wildenstein Galleries.) "EXPLANATION OF THE AIR BALLOON" 132 Engraving in The Boston Magazine, February 1784, opposite p. 147; explanatory text on p. 147-8. This and similar articles in American periodicals probably did more to create the widespread interest in the construction of balloons in America than the French publication cited in note to Jefferson to Turpin, 28 Apr. 1784. GEORGE WASHINGTON, PORTRAIT BY JOSEPH WRIGHT, FINISHED BY JOHN TRUMBULL 133 Jefferson describes this portrait, in a list of his paintings, as follows: "A Washington half length of full size or larger, an original taken by Wright (son of Mrs. Wright, famous for her works in wax), when Genl. Washington attended the meeting of the Cincinnati in Philadelphia May 1784. Passing then through that city on my way from Annapolis to Boston to embark for Europe I could only allow Wright time to finish the head and face and sketch the outlines of the body. These and the drapery were afterwards finished in Paris by Trum- bull" (Fiske Kimball, "Joseph Wright and His Portraits of Washington," Antiques, xv [1929], 377-82). See Hopkinson to Jefferson, 30 May 1784, p. 295-6. (Courtesy of the Massa- chusetts Historical Society.) THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE, AND COUNTRY JOURNAL, 24 JULY 1784 164 The first appearance in print of Jefferson's notes on the establishment of a coinage for the United States and the source of all subsequent official printings. See Notes on Coinage: Editorial Note (p. 157-8) and Document vII (p. 194-203). (Courtesy of Yale University.) SPECIMEN COINS STRUCK IN 1783 TO EXEMPLIFY ROBERT MORRIS' PROPOSED COINAGE FOR THE UNITED STATES. (See p. 189-93.) 165 These silver coins, struck by Benjamin Dudley under the direc- tion of Robert Morris, were acquired by the late John W. Gar- rett in 1923 and bequeathed to The Johns Hopkins University. All save one (No. 1: the 100-unit piece, or cent) appear to be unique. One 500-unit piece, or quint (No. 3), and the 1000- unit piece, or mark (No. 4), can be traced back to the estate of Charles Thomson. These two coins, therefore, may possibly be the identical specimens enclosed by Morris in his letter to Jefferson of 1 May 1784. One quint (No. 2) has a variant obverse and is lighter in weight than the other (No. 3); it is not known why this is so or indeed whether it was struck after 1783 from Dudley's dies, one of which may have been the obverse die for the 5-unit copper piece. It is almost certain that a copper 5-unit piece was struck under Morris' direction in 1783 (see p. 192-3), but no specimen is known to be extant. There is no known evidence that an 8-unit piece was struck, though it was included in Morris' scheme of coinage. The duplicate of the 100-unit piece is in private possession and is not illustrated, though photographs of it and of the one illus- trated here (No. 1) are in the American Numismatic Society and, on making a comparison of these photographs, Mr. Walter H. Breen concluded that both specimens were struck from the same pair of dies. The four silver Constellatio coins are here illustrated through the courtesy of the Trustees of The Johns Hopkins University and Dr. Sarah E. Freeman, Curator; they were photographed by Charles H. Weber. The editors are also indebted to Messrs. Louis C. West, R. H. Williamson, Walter H. Breen, and Sawyer McA. Mosser for their generous assistance and information respecting these coins, though they should not be held responsible for the editors' conclusions.
