ANNE CROWTHER is Professor of Social History at the Centre for the History of Medicine, University of Glasgow. She has previously written THE WORKHOUSE SYSTEM 1834•1939 (1981) AND is the FORMER EDITOR OF SOCIAL HISTORY OF MEDICINE.
