As was the case for the first two volumes, Bioorganic Chemistry: Carbohydrates consists of a set of chapters, the number of which is roughly equal to the number of weeks in a semester. The subject matter of each chapter is believed to reflect a set of issues and activities that are a focus of current research by bioorganic chemists in the field of carbohydrates. The first part of each chapter contains an overview of basic principles placed in the context of the area on which that chapter is focused. This is followed by a number of specific examples of current studies, which are presented in greater detail. This organization is intended to parallel the typical order of presentation in special topics courses for graduate students and advanced undergraduates.
