The aim of this book is to explain clearly and concisely the technology and applications of molecular genetics in those areas of clinical medicine where they have had the most impact. Professor Brock begins with a basic introduction to genetic terminology and an overview of Mendelian principles, gene structure and function. This leads to a description of the essential technical aspects of molecular genetics and the various ways in which both normal and mutant genes can be recognized and tracked through families and populations. The implications of the new techniques are explored and the potential for diagnosis management and treatment of a variety of human diseases is discussed. In the final chapter the impact of the human genome project on modern medicine is considered.
